Backstage Whispers overheard by Richard Andrews

The Bridge Theatre, at London Bridge, will stage the premieres of Alan Bennett's Allelujah!, set in the geriatric ward of a Yorkshire hospital, directed by Nicholas Hytner, opening on 18th July; and Lucinda Coxon's adaptation of Alys, Always, Harriet Laine's psychological thriller about a journalist who helps a woman in a car crash, also directed by Nicholas Hytner, next year.

Michael Morpurgo's War Horse, the story of a boy who goes to the battlefield in the First World War to rescue his horse, adapted by Nick Stafford, directed by Tom Morris and Marianne Elliott, in collaboration with South African puppet company Handspring, will return to the National Theatre for a season in November.

Forthcoming productions at Hampstead Theatre will include Rajiv Joseph's Describe The Night, exploring the blurred lines between lies, fiction and conspiracy theories, across 90 years of Soviet and post-Soviet history, in search of the genesis of the post-truth world, directed by Lisa Spirling, opening on 9th May; and Jemma Kennedy's Genesis Inc., a comedy looking at the commercialisation of human reproduction and the lengths to which people will go to defy biology, directed by Laurie Sansom, opening on 28th June.

The spring season at the Finborough Theatre, in Earl's Court, will include Bruce Graham's White Guy On The Bus, which explores the racial fault lines in contemporary America, directed by Jelena Budimir, opening on 29th March; Sarah Daniel's Masterpieces, following a woman's journey through a world of sexual exploitation, abuse and female subjugation, directed by Melissa Dunne, opening on 26th April; and the musical The Biograph Girl, book and lyrics by Warner Brown, music and lyrics by David Heneker, telling the story of silent film stars Mary Pickford and Lillian Gish and directors D W Griffith and Mack Sennett, directed by Jenny Eastop, opening on 24th May.

The musical Assassins, book by John Weidman, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, about people who have made attempts on the lives of American Presidents, with Abigail Williams, Alexander McMorran, Alfie Parker, Andrew Pepper, Conor McFarlane, Jack Reitman, Jason Kajdi, Peter Watts and Toby Hine, directed by Louise Bakker, will play at the Pleasence Theatre in Islington from 20th March.

The spring season at the Arcola Theatre, in Dalston, will include the premiere of Patrick Marmion's stage adaptation of Will Self's novel Great Apes, about an artist who believes that everyone around him has been turned into chimpanzees, directed by Oscar Pearce, from 14th March; Mike Bartlett's Not Talking, analysing the effects of truth and silence on relationships, directed by James Hillier, from 25th April; and Rotimi Babatunde's adaptation of Lola Shoneyin's novel The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives, following a patriarchal Nigerian household and the secrets that lie within it, directed by Femi Elufowoju Jr, from 7th June.

Judy Upton's Confidence, looking at 90s youth culture through three teenagers working at summer jobs in a seaside resort, with Tanya Burr, directed by Rob Drummer, will open at Southwark Playhouse, at the Elephant and Castle, on 25th May.
